Dyslexia Evaluations and Treatment

Mitchell’s Place now offers services for children with dyslexia, a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Services offered include:

Comprehensive evaluation and report by a psychologist and speech-language pathologist:

  • Assessment of intellectual abilities and academic skills relating to reading and writing, including determining strengths and weaknesses
  • Evaluation of expressive and receptive language abilities and phonological processing skills
  • Comprehensive report that includes psychological and speech-language assessments and specific recommendations for treatment and school services
  • Follow-up evaluation for monitoring response to interventions

Treatment provided by a speech-language pathologist:

  • 1:1 individualized treatment, using a multi-sensory approach that includes the use of visual, auditory, and tactile cues, provided by our speech-language pathologist.
  • Instruction focuses on teaching sound-symbol relationships, ability to read and recall sounds, decoding skills, encoding skills, segmenting, and blending syllables.
  • Instruction progresses from teaching individual sounds to syllables, to words with increasing length and complexity, and to sentences and questions.

Is my child appropriate for an evaluation?

Your child may benefit from an assessment if he or she has:

  • Trouble reading and sounding out words
  • Difficulty spelling unfamiliar and/or familiar words
  • Poor written expression
  • Difficulty reading long passages of text or taking an unusually long time to read passages
  • Trouble identifying rhyming words and similar word sounds
