Dyslexia Evaluations and Treatment

Mitchell’s Place now offers services for children with dyslexia, a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Services offered include:

Comprehensive evaluation and report by a psychologist and speech-language pathologist:

  • Assessment of intellectual abilities and academic skills relating to reading and writing, including determining strengths and weaknesses
  • Evaluation of expressive and receptive language abilities and phonological processing skills
  • Comprehensive report that includes psychological and speech-language assessments and specific recommendations for treatment and school services
  • Follow-up evaluation for monitoring response to interventions

Treatment provided by a speech-language pathologist:

  • 1:1 individualized treatment, using a multi-sensory approach that includes the use of visual, auditory, and tactile cues, provided by our speech-language pathologist.
  • Instruction focuses on teaching sound-symbol relationships, ability to read and recall sounds, decoding skills, encoding skills, segmenting, and blending syllables.
  • Instruction progresses from teaching individual sounds to syllables, to words with increasing length and complexity, and to sentences and questions.
